| Roof Runoff ManagementInstalling gutters, downspouts, and underground outlets can be very beneficial to the small farm. Managing roof runoff prevents clean water from flowing across concentrated waste areas and barnyards, reducing pollution and erosion. It improves water quality, reduces flooding, improves drainage, and helps reduce mud problems. Gutters and downspouts are an easy and relatively cheap way to capture excess water from barn roofs, shelters, etc. If using collected runoff for stock watering, a rain barrel can be used to store runoff. Alternatively, flexible piping can be attached midway down on selected downspouts and directed into a stock tank. An overflow outlet should be installed on the tank and attached by pipe to an underground outlet to prevent flooding and muddy conditions. All pipes and downspouts exposed in livestock use areas should be protected with wood or by other means to prevent damage. Underground outlets direct roof runoff to appropriate areas away from livestock use areas. Most outlets are installed at least 2 feet below ground surface. If the outlet crosses an area of livestock or vehicular use, a stronger piping material should be used to prevent damage or crushing. For more information about roof runoff management and designs, please contact the Resource Planner for your area.
