Kitsap Conservation District

The Kitsap Conservation District maintains a manure hotline for community use.  The list contains names and numbers of local farms who have more manure than they can use.  If you are a Kitsap livestock owner who would like to be added to the hotline list, please call or email the District.  If you are a local gardener or landscaper, and would like to have a copy of the list, please call or email your request.  Most suppliers on the list offer their manure supply for free or nominal price.  Call individual suppliers for more information and an appointment.

IMPORTANT

When taking home fresh, uncomposted manure material, place in a pile in a high, dry (well-drained) location in order to compost it for at least 60 days.  Cover the pile with a tarp during the rainy winter season in order to prevent valuable nutrients from washing away.  However, the compost should stay moist (like a wrung-out sponge) and be turned at least once a week to keep it well-oxygenated and free of odors.  The high heat generated in the middle of the pile will kill weed seeds and pathogens.  The end product should be soil-like, dark, crumbly, and earthy smelling.  Incorporate into garden soil or use as mulch.
